Evacuees will be housed in War Relocation Authority centers for the duration. Olivehurst, Yuba County, California. One of the new settlers.

 

Riverbank, San Joaquin Valley, California. Newly-built store and trading center typical of new shacktown community. This community of about 70 families is located near large tomato cannery. The Blackwood Family who are building and operate this store came from Clay County, Arkansas; are one of four related families who have migrated to California since 1936.
Edison, Kern County, California. Young migratory mother, originally from Texas. On the day before the photograph was made she and her husband traveled 35 miles each way to pick peas. They worked 5 hours each and together earned $2.25. They have two young children... Live in auto camp. On Arizona Highway 87, south of Chandler, Arizona. Grandmother and sick baby of migratory family camped in a trailer in an open field. They came from Amarillo, Texas, to pick cotton in Arizona. Cortaro Farms, Pinal County, Arizona. Yaqui Indian “Jacal“. On highly industrialized corporation farm these Yaquis live–by their own request–in the dwellings of their ancestors, native to the desert. Huts are made of mud, cactus ribs, and mesquite timbers.
