· Dugout houses / Windmills / Farms / Agricultural buildings
o Description: This page contains information about Haskell County, Kansas. A good example of the semi-subterranean houses that are found all over this part of Kansas. Outsiders think that they are so constructed to guard against hurricanes; but this, according to Haskell County farmers, is not even one of the reasons for their construction. Apparently a number of people were caught short by the low prices of 30 and 31 just when they were beginning to build houses with the money they had made in the rich Twenties. Those who could went ahead and finished off their cellars, then roofed them over and moved in. These places are easy to heat, cool in Summer, and take in less dust than the frame houses that are wholly above ground.
