El Cerrito, San Miguel County, New Mexico. The village of El Cerrito is set in a land pocket cut out of the mesa by the Pecos river. Here the twisting and meandering of the stream has made an almost circular valley enclosed by steep banks and cliffs. There is just room for the village - some thirty odd houses of stone and adobe - and a few small fields that produce most of what is grown by the villagers. All the other fields must be dry farmed. The land in the valley is rich and well watered, but there is not enough of it.
