About the Gallery

The Gallery of the Open Frontier, an online resource drawn initially from the primary collections of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), serves two essential functions:

  1. Allows researchers to easily view portions of the holdings of the National Archives from anywhere with an Internet connection.
  2. Provides a service to the educational community by making thousands of images easily accessible worldwide for educational use and historical analysis.

To create the Gallery of the Open Frontier, the University of Nebraska Press scanned images from the holdings of the National Archives. Each image has the NARA-supplied identifying data entered into a database for future access. The Gallery contains over 23,000 images.
